Introduction

Synthesis-1-2-3-4 & related correspondence is an account of the conflict resolution method that was worked out at the Johns Hopkins University, 3400 N Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21218, between Prof. C. A. Townsend and Ravindra Beladakere with the willing cooperation of the United States Department of Education, 400 Maryland Avenue, SW., Washington D. C. 20202.

Whether the cause of the origin of the Universe is spiritual or material has been debated by philosophers both in the occident and the orient from time immemorial. Plato the greatest of the philosophers put spirit above matter. Materialist tradition also has its adherents, the most famous being Democritus. Materialist tradition also existed in the occident in conflict with the orthodox systems.

The undercurrents of these conflicts like spirit/matter, subjective/objective, orthodox/heterodox, reason/revelation manifested in the personal/professional relationship between the parties to the conflict as material, linguistic and cultural transactions. This was primarily due to the change in the demographic pattern in the Academy/University resulting in the globalization of the unconscious that had reached the threshold of consciousness.

An attempted synthesis of opposites by the use of Alchemy and the synthesis of spirit and matter founded on Sri Aurobindo' s integral dualism led to the validation of the nondiscriminatory ED Civil Rights Titles. This approach also opened up several new avenues for solving long standing conflicts in the Academy/University like mind vs matter, subjective vsvs evolution, science vs religion and conscious vs unconscious only to mention a few. This approach also enabled a new understanding of the unconscious processes of colonial history in light of the July 4^th declaration of independence in the territories of United States of America. objective, creation

With the knowledge bases thus discovered and the with the new materials of association an attempt was made to establish a state-of-the-art pharmaceutical research institute laying foundation to future integral medicine/education. The conflict resolution process also throws light on the divine origins of July 4^th, 1776 and the evolution of the mind in relation to it. This approach explains how this spirit has pervaded the national movements across the world and especially in India where the author comes from.

The materials presented during the conflict resolution process strengthens an integral approach to solve current problems of the world especially the meaning of post colonial history. The integration process also points to the existence of a cosmic computer with various addresses each denoting a cellular unit.

The testimonials presented in the intellectual and historical courts point to the origin of the New World order in the great first cause of July 4^th, 1776. The existing laws and institutions and especially that of the family should be reformed/reconstituted in light of this declaration. This is in order transcend separateness of colonial existence and attain harmonious integration as a family of nations s a first step towards establishing a new world order.

Abstract

The conflict between Ravi Beladakere and C. A. Townsend in Remsen Hall, Johns Hopkins University was purely Historical and Cultural. 'Synthesis' attempted to alleviate these differences by emphasizing a 'Truth' basis for our existence. That the Philosophical, Cultural and Historical differences can be sorted out in the Institution of Marriage/Family and solemnized in a treaty (Synthesis). That Family is the most fundamental Institution for the survival of the Civilized World is also a Social, Spiritual, Ethical and most importantly a Political Institution.

With the change in Demographic pattern and the attainment of Civil Rights and Liberties this Institution only Legislates these Constitutional Safeguards and also emphasizes Duties as a Student, a Householder and as a Citizen of State.

The Institution of Family should be built on the Real foundation of Truth and at its best is Gandhian emphasizing Platonic ideals. This also includes Non-Cooperation (conflict), Civil Disobedience (individuality) and Non-violence (continence). A violator of these ideals should accept his punishment and obey its dictates. The best punishment is Non punitive and Reformatory.

The attainment of Civil Rights and Liberties does not sanction a boorish violation of Constitutional limits. It is possible to lead a truthful and honest life by approaching 'Social Institutions' for assistance where Truths are Legislated and their Forms protected.

Although Rational Thought should be given prominence in Educational curricula it is worldly wise to operate on Ethical level of thought which is its fruit.

Thus Plato has been Legislated in Academia.

Synthesis-1

It is said that character of a Man is the History of his Nation as written in his subconscious mind. The History of India at least for the past 800 years is very traumatic. The process of de-colonization has just begun and it is bound to be very painful. It is a fact that studying History is a very painful experience to the Mind, but we have no option. If we as Academicians would like to establish a just World Order, we have no other avenue than studying the evolution of our minds. What best can we do to redress the grievances and soothe the oppressed minds? I do not believe that Science is outside of Society. It is an integral part of History, Sociology, Economics and has roots in Philosophy.

The spinning jenny would probably never be invented if the British did not win the battle of Plassey (1757) in India and captured the cotton growing areas in Bengal. Eventually, the British campaign in India paved way to Industrial Revolution in England. The Conflict between the Indo-Greeks in Ancient India eventually paved way for new innovations in Indo-Greek architecture and newer ways of Religious worship. It is said that idol worship in India is perhaps a Greek influence. There is some credence to this statement as Ancient Indians only worshipped Nature (air, water, earth and fire). Even in the Medieval and Modern world many Scientific innovations and discoveries are products of conflicting minds. Certainly, there are Technologies, which sprung-out from man's innate love for humanity. The most notable is Gandhiji's spinning wheel, which revolutionized colonized Indian minds and led to the fall of British Empire in India. Wireless telegraph, Davy's Safety Lamp, Dr. Jenner's Vaccination, Telephone and Electricity are other significant mentionables. In-fact, the great Indian scientist Jagadish Chandra Bose also worked on Wireless and for the first time demonstrated that plants also have 'Life'. Although the British knighted him he went through some suppression. Eventually he established the Asiatic Society of India to propagate the Spirit of Inquiry and Cultural pride. He continues to be my role model in Science.

War or Peace, Colony or Independence the Indo-Anglian collaboration in Science continued and reached pinnacles of glory. The most celebrated ones are Hardy-Ramanujan (A mathematical genius from India whom Hardy rated as the next great mathematician after Fredrich Gauss {Ref: A Mathematicians Apology by G. H. Hardy and a biographical sketch on Hardy in C. P. Snow's ‘A Variety of Men'}, Eddington-Chandrasekhar (Nobel Laurate in Physics), J.B.S.Haldane -Mahanalobis (Statistics){Haldane spent his last years in India as a Citizen}, Hoyle-Narlikar (Astrophysics), Sayendranath Bose-Einstein (Bosons). Hodgkins-Ramaseshan (X-ray crystallography), Todd-Khorana (Chemistry) and many others of major or minor significance.

My own feeling about the Minds of these Scientists is that they had passion and purpose and did not work for 'Self' esteem. Their contributions were recognized by Society and 'Self' esteem bestowed on them. Even in the European tradition Scientists like Galileo, Faraday and a galaxy of other Scientists had passion for ‘Truth’. Self-esteem was recognized by Society. Scientists do not work for glamour or self-esteem.

It should also be noted that Scientists in the past worked without much Economical and Material support from the Establishment. It is only in the post-war and post-colonial times that Science has been implemented on a large scale in both the 'Developed' and 'Developing Countries' for the betterment of Human Life. This has led to the Institutionalization of Science akin to the Institutionalization of Religion in the Medieval World. It is my ‘perception’ that Science has increasingly meant to be betterment of 'Material' life in the United States including the West. But Science is not making gadgets and computers. The primary purpose of Scientific Temper and her methods are to seek Truth. Truth alone is. There is nothing else besides it. When an individual according to his/her capacities and innate Nature realizes Truth, then mind will seek those Truths in Matter. A healthy Materialistic Society is only a product of healthy mind, which can be realized by ones passion for Truth. From my meager knowledge of the History of United States including the West, such a passion is abundant in her mind. This potential could be harnessed by engineering ‘Truth Consciousness’ in the minds of her people. This is achievable by directing the propaganda machinery (Radio, Television) and adorning the empty walls of the Academy with portraits of great men and women who have made significant contribution to the health of the Society both Materially and Spiritually.

The ascetic tradition of India rejected everything Material. Matter, they said is Unreal. The real is Spiritual (Compare this with Plato). My own realization is that Spirit and Matter cannot be separated. They are like the light and its shadow, mirror and its reflection-the inseparable entities. Hence the study of Matter is equally important for the realization of Spirit. I am still studying as to why the Indian tradition rejected everything Material. In my own personal life, I have rejected Gold and Diamond, both of which have led to traumatic History in India and World over.

Gandhiji, always believed in the innate goodness of human beings and cautioned people not to lose faith in Humanity. He cautioned Indians from running away from the World. Although he launched a campaign against British goods, which led to unemployment in England, he was welcomed there with a gleeful crowd during the Round Table Conference in 1935.

Indian Government is now in the process of liberalization. The paranoid tendencies have been set aside or overcome and the markets are open to other countries. Western Technology including American is now welcome. These Technologies have to be tested on the fertile ground of Indian soil. 'Testability' of any theory is a Scientific Method. Ultimately Society is the best or only Judge. It is my firm belief that a healthy mind is beyond love and hate, pride and prejudice, lust and anger. It neither accepts nor rejects. It seeks only Unity in acceptance.

Synthesis -2

In Synthesis-1 I have underlined Conflict as a basis for our evolution. I have also exerted great care in stressing conflicting minds and not bodies as the latter may lead to a large-scale violence. If the 'Self' is identified not with the 'Mind' but with Body (Matter) alone large-scale violence may ensue. The establishment of a Divine order based on the principles of Truth and Non-Violence was rendered possible in Ancient India by Asoka the Great. Semi barbarian he was, after Kalinga war (261 B. C) in which many thousands were either maimed, wounded, killed and rendered homeless and widowed [compare the situation in poem 'After Blenheim' by Robert Southey wherein the metaphor 'the child is the father of man' is stressed]. The king went through a transformation (rather regeneration meaning death to use Helen Keller's terminology in 'My Religion') at the gory sight on the battlefield. He was later preached or initiated into the Eight-Fold Path of Buddhism by a monk and reformed. He went on to establish a Divine order in India and perhaps is the first king to establish Veterinary hospitals and promote a vegetarian diet. The English novelist H. G. Wells has declared in his 'Short History of the World' that Asoka is the greatest king World has ever known. Compare and contrast this with Alexander the Great who had no such 'Religious' company. So, what then is Religion? If Scientific temper and her methods lead to an objective illumination of (i.e., manifesting the mind in the un-manifest Cosmos) of Nature, Religion leads to a subjective synthesis (borrowed from the great Indian revolutionary and Philosopher, Sri Aurobindo-author of " The Life Divine"). The purpose of Science and Religion are in quest for 'truth' and sometimes the same 'Truths' are attained by following different paths and when these happen to intersect 'conflict' might ensue. If a middle ground or a compromise is failed to realize then the Ideas or Realizations may assume the Form of dogma leading to disharmony of mind. Disharmony of minds lead to chaos in Society, thereby leading to the collapse of social order.

It is my belief that Christ, Galileo, Gandhi and Buddha are the foremost scientists humanity has produced. Christ and Galileo are the same for both fought the organized tyranny and authoritarianism of an established Institution/s, which had nothing to do with promoting Science or Religion or her quest for Truth. Similarly, Buddha assumed his form to cleanse the minds of the Society 'colonized' by blindly ritualistic and materialistic modes of Existence. There is also an imminent danger (already is!) of ritualization in Science by blindly insisting on publications (quantity) awards and other perquisites that go along with that. These are the very perquisites that kept a Brahminical order in India and Clergy in the West prosperous and vested.

Gandhiji's mission was a different one. His real mission in Life was to not only Establish Indian Nation alone, but also a World Order based on the synthesis of Science and Religion. Science as a product of objective analysis of Society and Nature by the West. This being a product of various revolutions, Magna Charta, War and attainment of Civil Rights and Liberties. Religion as a subjective synthesis and self-realization a product of Ancient Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Christianity. This, he attained by his steadfast adherence to the principles of Truth and Non -violence. An incorrigible idealist indeed, who paid a handsome price for his ideals with his Life-a tradition inherited by us from Socrates, Galileo and Copernicus.

Now, I think I am in a position to define as to who Scientists are. They are 'Truth' Forms of which we are only manifestations. [Compare this with Plato's Theory of Forms]. 'Truth' takes the bodily (Matter) form as Humans and Material Forms (Technology) to sanitize Society both Mentally and Naturally. Hence, Platonization of Society is an attainable goal only if there is a healthy synthesis of Science and Religion. Science and Religion can function symbiotically like blind and lame. Science without religion is blind and religion without science is lame, hand in hand, they will reach a common destination.

Synthesis - 3

Patenting of Truths will lead to Collapse of Scientific Institutions.

The non-availability of Bible in layman's language in the medieval world kept the Humanity in ignorance. It was only after this great work of Humanity was made available to Society in her predominant language, led to revolutionization of her mind. The monopoly over the religious works in Sanskrit language by Brahminical aristocracy in India led to the exploitation of many and chained the Society in colonial bondage for hundreds of years. It took a Gandhi and various other social reformers (a product of conflict with British Empire) to explain the gist of ancient religion to the lay public at large. The effect of Christianity is clearly perceptible (mother Teresa being living example). We now come to the central point of Matthew Arnold's philosophy that 'perfection' is impossible in isolation, an ideal shared by the ancient Sankhya Philosophy of the Hindus, that attainment of Purusa (Manhood) is impossible without Prakriti (Nature). Conflict with the Society and among the members (humans and beasts) leads to 'perfection', meaning a powerful social, moral and political order. Isolation only leads to ignorance and bondage. Patenting of knowledge in the 'modern' Industrial world is an outmoded and most unscientific method of classifying data. It represents a paranoid tendency, which will throw Society into a schizophrenic disorder. 'Truths' are self-manifest. They percolate to all echelons of society through Laws known and unknown. The church tried patenting some knowledge by suppressing Truth (Galileo) but ultimately Truth alone triumphed. Christ went through a similar fate but his 'Consciousness' is still alive in Humanity. The present day Science has been subject to colonization by Multinationals and big business Houses with narrow interests who make business out of human misery-a practice shunned by enlightened religions like Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and various other Religions. Making business out of human misery is detestable and an insult to Hippocrates whose Oath is now unrealizable to most Doctors. The West produced the great Albert Schweitzer and various Missionary Hospitals. Dr. Schweitzer never made business out of human misery nor did eminent Gandhian, Dr. Hardikar. We do not do business with human misery. We only trade Goods and Services. Love and Truths are not bartered and traded. The Ancient Greeks did not patent their discoveries nor did Hindus their decimal system. These flowed freely to all nooks and corners of the world and knit humanity into one working class.

Patenting inventions will only lead to ruination of our Academies, thereby affecting the very health of Society. This problem merits serious consideration. Truth alone is real and a system based only on 'real' terms will survive. A system based on concrete terms like 'Self’ esteem and business without ethics is bound to collapse like a building whose foundation is too weak.

The Training of a modern Scientist as an Individual

How do we engineer 'Truth Consciousness' in the mind of an Individual?

The large-scale application of Science for betterment of Material Existence of Human Life has led to the urbanization of most Societies. These urban centers heavily rely on Technology (rather machinery) for their survival. Leisure does not encourage creativity but submission to forced idleness. Most of these technologies to the best of my knowledge have roots in War research. It is self-evident when studying history, that the war research was the outcome of a misguided philosophy of colonization, greed and hatred. These Technologies did not spring out from innate love for Humanity. These Technologies are also a product of team research. These teams were nothing but army battalion. The primary purpose of these research teams were not to seek a better life for Humanity but acquisition of land and gold and formation of Nation States based on narrow sectarian and paranoid tendencies. Eminent philosophers like H. G. Wells, Aldous Huxley including our Einstein rejected the idea of Nationalism. There is enough evidence in History that Indian spirituality also evolved on similar lines giving way to superstition, dogma and internecine quarrels. These conflicts engineered a lot of bloodshed and thwarted any moral and Social Development. There is also enough evidence in History (Kajuraho Temple) that Indians may have gone too sensual, thereby losing direction and purpose for their existence.

The large-scale application of these war technologies has led to urbanization of United States. The rise of Multinationals has robbed most of the citizens of their dynamism and individuality and one can see an increasing and total dependence on these Institutions and Federal Institutions for a survival. The increasing emphasis on High Technologies has rendered the 'less privileged' section of the population handicapped and paralyzed. A situation similar to colonial India where the invasion of machinery from the Empire rendered millions unemployed. With the absence of a Divine Order and any regard to Universal Truths, the Cities have verily become uninhabitable and cesspool of crime, violence and drugs. A deviation from the very ideals this country stands for. Increasing emphasis and idolization of American dream, rather an American ideal (Ask not what the country has done for you, but what you can do for the country-JFK) has provoked people to chase mirage and illusions. At this point of time we cannot turn the Wheel back from and go back to medieval modes of production. Gandhiji was not against machinery. He was only against usurpation of human labor by machinery and consequent slavery to it. A scientist should learn to recognize order in chaos. He/she should not only recognize problems, but also propose solutions, test and critically evaluate them. The training of a Scientist in the Academy has been increasingly bookish working only on simple and ideal systems. The accomplishment of a Masters or a Ph. D is regarded as successful execution of a problem (theoretical or experimental), writing an attractive thesis with nice cartoons and procuring a decent paying job. A Scientist should not only have an in-depth insight into a problem but should also have a sufficient breadth of mind (knowledge). Recognition of social problems (disorder) and working out a solution (order) in his/her mind will lead to harmony of mind. Harmony of mind leads to a harmonious existence, a part of which will percolate into Society to establish order. A scientist should be strongly encouraged not only to develop Scientific Temper and Spirit of Inquiry but also an ideal. This is achievable by organizing debates in their respective Departments with Faculty as unbiased Judges. A topic like 'Is Woodward's chemistry relevant to the Society at all' should be debated by individuals pro and anti. This will encourage boldness in thinking and reflects in their methods of research and personal lives. Exchange of ideas in a group or audiences will clear away a lot of confusion in mind leading to harmony. Conflict should be encouraged. Suppression of scientific thinking will lead to ruination of ones mind leading to subjugation of entire society. The Mogul Empire in India prospered under Akbar the Great. He encouraged a synthesis approach towards conflicting Religions and evolved a new religion called Din-Illahi. His great grand son Aurangzeb a fanatic who indulged in fratricide and large-scale war led to the collapse of the entire Empire.

Scientist as a Satyagrahi (Truth Beholder)

Satyagraha or beholding Truth is the most powerful weapon. It is not a weapon of the cowards. I have already substantiated this inference with enough Historical examples. Gandhiji experimented 'Truth' on a large scale by methods of Non-Cooperation, Civil-Disobedience and steadfast adherence to Non-Violence. The experimental results are already perceptible to a trained Scientist (Satyagrahi). Albert Einstein perceived it, so did Richard Attenborough, Martin Luther King Jr. and many others of major or minor significance. The greatest of the scientists were beholders of 'Truth'. Their steadfast adherence to Truth bestowed on Humanity a shower of Material Comforts, Civil Liberties and Political Rights. Would it not be befitting their sacrifices that we train scientists of present World in the methods of Satyagraha (Training in the methods of 'Truth Consciousness' in the minds of scientists). This consciousness will shower a bounty on Society in terms of Mental Health, Family values and Human relationships. Truth is order. Truth will bring down the present day chaos and confusion in the world for which eminent men like Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr. became martyred. It will knit the Scientists of the World into one community and realize Albert Einstein's dream of World Government. Truth will sanitize Mind and Nature and act as panacea for all our Environmental problems. Truth alone is real and let us grasp and behold it. If principles of Truth are given a fair trial (experimentation), Truth alone will triumph. Together (India and the West) we can work out a Truth basis for Scientific Education and establish a prosperous and healthy Society.

Family as a Scientific Institution.

(Whole World is a Family)

The Institution of Marriage is one of the strongest and most enduring of all the Institutions in India. This Institution has withstood various Social and Political turmoil for thousands of years.

The evolution of Institution of marriage also has roots in conflict. A simple instance where two groups (warring communities) would end up signing a treaty(synthesis) during the conflict. Goods and Services were exchanged or bartered. Men and women were also exchanged in the package. The relationship was solemnized in the Institution of Marriage. The Institution of marriage acts as a check against the flood of sensuality which can throw entire Society into chaos like an uncontrolled fire engulfing a whole forest including its inhabitants. The fire of love, emotions and other feelings that go with human relationships can be 'imprisoned' in the Institution of marriage thereby checking the surge of these forces into Society. Strengthening the Institution of marriage as a first priority will render individuals emotionally stable and alleviate burden on the Federal Institutions like prisons, mental asylums and counseling centers. Parents should be encouraged to be first counselors, mother Divinized and regarded first teacher. What makes a healthy, stable and an ideal family. I have emphasized marriage as a product of conflict. The conflicting Indo-Greeks ended up marrying each other. The Mauryan king Chandragupta married daughter of Greek Ambassador Selucus. Marriage as an Institution has very little to do with Romantic Love- a fantasy indulged by feudals and knights. Taj Mahal at Agra in India is a product of Emperors 'love' for his queen through whom he begot about sixteen children. Familial love is a product of adhering to the principles of Truth which also include, Non-Cooperation (conflict), Civil-Disobedience(individuality), Non-Violence(continence) and committing oneself to an ideal. Since exchange of goods and services is a part of any marriage [between individuals, corporate or Nations(Society)] this Institution reflects the methods of production. If the methods of production are based on 'self esteem' and paranoid tendencies they percolate into the Institution causing its downfall. If the methods of production are based on love (an ideal) {labor of love}, they will percolate into the Institution and render it strong and stable.

Although teeming millions have been rendered poor and 'homeless' in India (which is a product of Industrial Revolution) they still continue to cherish 'Family values' and eke out a happy existence. United States can use this opportunity to extend a 'Marriage Proposal' to the President of India, who is an eminent Gandhian and a Philosopher and purchase the goods manufactured in Cottage and Village Industries. These labors of love of Gandhi's children when they make appearance in the American Markets will revolutionize the minds here; similar to the 'magic' Gandhiji's spinning wheel did in colonial India. This will generate millions of small jobs in India in the village sectors and decongest the urban centers and help establish a healthy world order. Will USA take the first step? It won't cost you too much. You can invite Gandhi home.

Summary and Conclusion

The declaration of United States of America as independent territories on July 4^th 1776 was not only a ground breaking event in the establishment of a New World order but also for the first time heralded the recognition of the Rights of the Man.

The Pilgrim Fathers, when they set out on their great journey to the new continent in search of freedom from the repressive Old World, little did they know that on landing there they were setting the first step on the land which in future would provide a neutral ground for the settlement of long standing conflicts that plagued the Old World. The most significant of these conflicts was that of Manhood.

The creature ‘Man’ conveys confusing signals to the mind. If Plato did not validate the Man made laws against the God made laws as he was destined to be sullied by the earthy nature, some religious scriptures were interpreted as portraying man as fallen. What is ‘Manly’ nature? In order to build a new edifice, a new world order, or to venture into a new territory ‘Man’ power is a necessary condition. The seminal nature of Manhood implies a long gestating period of ‘boyhood’ a period when everything is play and fun and nature is in its pristine purity undifferentiated. The evolution to Manhood from the ‘innocence’ of boyhood is a growth; a growth although gradual is spontaneous on reaching the threshold of seminal thinking. Nature is now differentiated and mind starts to form. But how is the attainment of manhood rendered possible by nature? The impulse to procreate is innate in all living matter. Living beings are differentiated from the non-living primarily by their ability to replicate themselves. In order to maintain the natural order of things, we are told by Darwin that nature selects the fittest for survival. But nature doesn’t stop at survival alone. She has to go ahead to ‘perfect’ and harmonize her existence in the manifold Cosmos. It is with this primary objective that she chose ‘Man’ to intercourse with her in labor to give birth to successive generations. In this grand evolutionary process ‘Man’ is only necessary but not sufficient. The differentiated nature pose an antithesis. To establish harmony and order meaning symmetry, we have to postulate the subjective ‘Womanhood’ in Man which is made manifest objectively and constituted differently.

The impulse towards Manhood is the impulse towards Godhead which means perfection and complete expression.

Having agreed upon the necessary and sufficient conditions for the establishment of a New World order, what are the elements that constitute these opposites (subjective/objective; man/woman; human/divine)?

Plato in his dialogue Timaeus puts it in the mouth of Socrates; 1,2,3 where is the fourth? The dialogue goes on where Socrates puts forward his idea of the Just Republic and explicitly states that there should be no gender discrimination in education.

The declaration of July 4^th, 1776 on the new continent separated itself from the old world (colonialism) was the beginning of the birth of the ‘Man’ who severed his bonds with the Mother in search of a new world founded on the principles of Liberty, Equality and Justice. Such a man was to be guided by Providence alone. It is not a matter of mere coincidence that ‘The Wealth of Nations’ by Adam Smith was published in the same year. Here Man’s activities were guided by self interest alone and that there was an invisible hand guiding the destiny of the nations. The man of Providence (invisible hand? ) was constituted of Labor, Capital and Profits; a triune system driven by ‘self’ interest alone. The impulse of the man missioned for profitable ‘self’ expression in matter available to him by means of his intellect combined with labor and capital marks a distinct departure from the natural and voyaging man of the Old World who expressed mainly by beastly instincts alone. Guided by Providence this man drafted the first written Democratic Constitution that would provide nuts, bolts and gearwheels for the New Machinery explicitly trusting God and laying emphasis on the One in the many. Thus began his ascent towards the Godhead with a view to establish a Divine Life in a world torn apart by factions, sectarian feuds and suppression of all things against the autocratic demoniac States. Thus the newly discovered territories were readied as a play ground for the manifestation of these forces that would constitute a New World order.

Thus on the threshold of a new unexplored continent blessed by Liberty the democratic man was presented with unlimited opportunities. Underneath these he was secretly (unconsciously) missioned for a purpose.

The Globalization or Expansion of Athens: The Evolution of the Intellectual Man.

The unfolding of the Divine in Mind, Life and Matter was rendered possible in the New World in her Laws and Institutions aimed at furthering Justice and Liberty. The Capital city of Greece, Athens, whose city Goddess Athena (Parthenon) took her birth from the head of her father Zeus (the phallic man as revealed in the statues and myths), symbolized intellect. Athens She was also rich in culture and epitome of civilization. Matthew Arnold opined that to be civilized is to be Greek. The intellectual man of the New World labored in love. If the discovery of electricity, taming and harnessing this force to drive new machinery is one part of the divine mind translated into life then the many inventions of the Wizard of the Menlo Park is a testimony of this force unfolding secretly in the homes of the New World. The flights of his imagination took the material form in the aircraft providing ample proof of Love in labor in Man. The qualitative change in society and her modes of working are a direct result of the application of pure ideas in matter, giving birth to technologies. These technologies are the instruments through which movement was made possible for society from a lower to a higher level of existence. These technologies acted as material aids for people from different ethnic backgrounds to come together and work and cooperate paving the way for foundations to be laid for a new world. was a Democratic State and home to great thinkers, intellectuals and men of accomplishments.

The conflict between science and religion in the old world was that of a power struggle between the true and the false, good and bad, light and darkness. The church was dogmatic about revelation and science believed in inferences arrived at logically. Reason was her crowning glory. These religious institutions wanted to preserve the existing status quo in their institutions and suppressed any free thinking lest the hierarchy be questioned, which led to degeneration and corruption. In the natural order of things it is Truth that is uppermost. The spirit of inquiry goes on. Scientists are not dogmatic or ungodly. Their mission is discovery of Truth by objective means and the scriptures are explicit about truth and God being one and the same. Hence in rational order of things subjective should correspond with the objective. The discovery of the Universal laws is the primary aim of scientific inquiry and propagation of Universal Love is the primary aim of the religious. Thus science and religion are two running streams whose confluence generates a synthesis of subjective/objective i.e. reason/revelation.

If the discovery of the Universal Laws is the primary aim of scientific inquiry, then science aims at using the same rigorous methods in seeking an objective, rational God as opposed to the subjective/irrational one.

This objective God should be tangible, expressible and experienced by all if it be Universal. If religion sought this God in the heads of the institutions and the divine right of the rulers, science seeks the same truths in the Democratic Government expressible in her laws, courts, legislation and institutions.

Only a Democratic Man is capable of Scientific Inquiry

The Universal laws and truths veiled in nature can only be unraveled by developing a Democratic/Truth consciousness. Plato in his dialogue ‘Symposium’ describes the gradations of Love leading from the body to the mind to the Universal. Universal love or impersonal love being the highest attainable. It is frequently opined that the history of the man is the history of the science. The universal nature of scientific man enabled his thoughts to break the conventional barriers of Nationalism, gender, religion etc. the democratic/scientific man is the one who ascends to the realm of pure consciousness ie., non discriminatory existence. This has been rendered possible by adult suffrage, free speech and free access to information and Rights. The fundamental right of the man is to labor. This is constitutional. When a man is in love he has to labor. The Universalization of science has not only been rendered possible by free flow of thoughts across the globe and by concomitant penetration of technologies even in the closed societies, thereby integrating them with open and democratic. The divine mind behind the generation of intellect/thoughts manifesting materially as technologies now has a formidable presence all over the globe including non-democratic societies. This is a fore runner of the new universal divine consciousness that would emerge in time when the conditions are ripe.

The Mission of the Scientist in the New World

The Odyssey of the scientist

The World has witnessed a revolution since Socrates was put to death by making him drink poison for his unflinching adherence to truth. An upholder of law, a model citizen, brave and courageous he had to face death in the hands of cowards who were afraid of truth. The ordeal of Truth seekers had only begun with Socrates. Scientific Inquiry had to put up with repressive regimes and many a eminent scientists were put at stake. It was only during the renaissance that scientific inquiry got a fresh impetus and even during this period Galileo had to suffer the insecurity of the church. After a series of trials and tribulations it was only on July 4^th, 1776 that the scientist attained his Manhood. He secured for himself protection against the suppression by the church and in a land distant from the dogma of the old world and reigned by Liberty, could once again grow wings and soar high in thought and action. It was from the new world that a fresh wave of new thinking originated with a powerful current which swept the entire world. The individuality of Thoreau who refused to budge to the will of the state against his conscience reminds us of Socrates born again. Only this time the State could not arbitrarily administer poison to save its vested interests.

The industrial revolution in England powered by coal/steam gave a fresh impetus to the advancement of technology. With the advent of the factories/manufacturing industries which reaped profits, scientific research got a fresh impetus. Science was now perceived as useful. Scientific research/inquiry was no longer the passion of the nobles, pioneers and eccentrics, but attained professional dignity. The spread of University education led to the proliferation of research laboratories where scientific inquiry/research could proceed in an institutional set up. The utilitarian approach to scientific research thereby gained a foot hold with a view to augment the profits of the industry. The post war scenario witnessed a heavy commercialization of the war research not only in the new world but elsewhere across the globe where the spirit of July 4^th, had already pervaded. Little did the utilitarian know that the inquiring spirit behind these technologies would make an impact on the unconscious and lead to the emergence of the new consciousness. To transition from a old world paradigm to a new world implies a new course at the end of which the material of association are radically different from that of the old. This means a new law, a new existential basis and a cosmos where a new order prevails. Since July 4th, 1776 the spirit which breathed a new life into the inquiring minds was not only responsible have new laws and institutions but also rapid innovations in technology, management and human resource development. Beginning with the harnessing of the electrical force, and harnessing of motive power in steam, electricity, petroleum etc. and the advent of communication technologies like telephone and televisions leading up to the unveiling of the enormous power hidden in the atom and finally culminating in the advent of desk top personal computers fitted with technologies for the free flow of information has tightly integrated the globe. These have led to previously hitherto unknown exchange/interaction and has propelled the entire humanity into a threshold of a new consciousness and a new linguistic existence.

The guiding spirit behind these technologies (materials) which has origin in the great first cause of July 4^th, 1776 has now pervaded the entire globe and manifesting (subconsciously) materially as a personal computer in homes across the world. this has made possible for every home to interact and integrate with every other home across the globe.

Scientific enterprise which started out as an individual and pioneering enterprise and as an interactive system at the University/Industry level has now advanced into the homes and the same quality of open interaction is now possible shunning all barriers. The long journey of the Odysseus in the scientist struggling against repressive regimes, world wars to the Ithaca of the new world is almost complete. Having arrived where does he go from here.

Home at last!

In order to arrive home the scientist had to face a variety of hardships and challenges. His Universal thinking was antithetical to the ideas of nationalism current then and even now. His love of liberty and equality was directly opposed to the discriminatory practices prevalent then and even today. Guided initially by a strictly mechanical deterministic trajectory he had to face the onslaught of the theory of relativity and suffer internal contradictions of the non-deterministic quantum mechanics. Not only that he had to put with his discoveries and inventions being used in the two world wars and the horror of unleashing the power in the atom for the destruction of lives. He could no longer remain a mute witness any more and sought a voice in decision making panels. Had the inquiry reached the limit that he could no longer logically infer any more?

The limit of all knowledge is opposites, contradictions or in alchemical parlance paradoxa. At the end of his epic journey he is faced with internal contradictions like reason vs irrationality, individual vs the collective, subjective vs the objective, determinism vs indeterminism, environment vs employment, utility vs justice, progress vs stagnation only to name a few. The new materials, laws and institutions which form his building material should enable him to establish his office of reason at home and validate his Manhood. He should employ bold, non traditional and innovative methods in home management where his emotions are now invested and form his capital. A new dialogue with liberated nature is imperative. All things that come into existence must get into a relation for further movement. Failure of the new scientist to get into a relation and withdrawing from worldly activities will lead to autism and loss of all the wealth of knowledge now accumulated by tireless labor and toil.

A fresh look at the study of alchemy can help in this direction. Alchemy has been dubbed as pseudo science for being mystical and very secretive in research. Learned men scoffed at the alchemists craze for making gold from the base metals. At this point it is relevant to recall that the great Newton also had a tryst with alchemy. Study of alchemy will throw light on the psychology of the unconscious, the union of opposites (mystique marriage) and the dark side of the psyche. These forces have played a secret role in the historical process and bringing this into consciousness will greatly alleviate the psychological suffering now experienced by people world over, depression, schizophrenia and manic depression to mention only a few. These principles can be amplified at discovering correspondences paving the way to new improved international relationships. This can even help us to arrive at new disciplines by integrating hitherto various unrelated discipline and arrive at a new mental state.

In order to function at his new home, scientist must develop a new linguistic basis for his communication, discover patterns of relationship in history and look out for new signs and symbols that my provide new insight into the working of the unconscious process that have taken place. Him confronting the doubles and multiples is not a defeat of reason but a challenge to be faced with an open mind. The invisible hand that guided his destiny is that of the divine economist. New principles of economics based on the spirit of existence aimed at optimum exchange between possessed and dispossessed should be worked out. This will eliminate any duplication of research just to merely give a match and will be environmentally sound. This should be possible as the political philosophies and systems of Government of Nations with divergent ideology are now converging. Trading for peace should become a norm.

Non-Linear (Complex) Thinking:

The various problems and contradictions prevalent in the world today cannot be solved by simple thinking alone. Nature although efficient is not straight forward in her execution of the grand schemes for her progress and evolution. Primitive man feared nature and to him earth appeared flat. The genius of the Greek thinkers and academicians unraveled a lot her mysteries by the use of pure geometry. Sphere was considered as the most perfect figure because planets were discovered to have followed a perfect path. After a period of darkness and ignorance the inquiring spirit was revived again during the renaissance and Man’s impulse to expand (globalize) his consciousness by voyaging to the new lands in search of fortune and fame. Here again he was secretly (unconsciously) missioned for a divine purpose. The Europeans nearness to the sea and the then prevailing social conditions acted as a spur to the new overseas venture and today almost every part of the globe has been mapped and we know it to be a sphere.

The voyaging man conflicted with the local cultures and inhabitants to secure a foothold for himself in these regions. Thus started the process of colonization. But nature had a grand purpose than mere colonization. She secretly set out to integrate the various cultures to arrive at a composite one. What spurs migration of races, their preference to integrate with a specific culture and their motives need to be investigated. A simple 2 + 2 = 4 approach at interpreting the colonial history is not sufficient. As active imagination is required a complex approach is necessary. A complex plane consists of a real plus imaginary. The unconscious processes that compelled the migration of people to achieve expansion in consciousness needs immediate attention to solve problems of ethnic conflicts in the present world. An integral approach and a complex thinking aimed at discovering correspondences not only in the personal and collective histories but also in the mythology will unravel many unknown mysteries. It is now known that myth making faculties exist in the unconscious. Complex thinking will introduce a new dimension in our lives and strengthen fraternity and new exchanges (trade) and rewards compensation. This is a pre requisite in our movement towards the establishment of a Global village. The rapid urbanization of the globe implies exponential growth in mans intellectual activities and trading potentials. Complex thinking may lay the foundation to trading for peace and may herald a new approach to solving environmental problems and unnecessary competitions.

Integral Education and Integral Mind:

Science and Humanities must co-exist

‘Mind in its divine origin is related to Truth consciousness. So long as mind is not separated from supermind, it doesn’t support perversions and falsehoods but various workings of the universal Truth. Material force is a subconscious operation of the will power.

Aurobindo

In the new world order the education should achieve by imparting training to both mind and body with equal priority. If the denigration of the body as a bundle of senses by the spiritualists led to poverty of life and meaningless asceticism then mindless materialism had more harmful effects in environmental degradation and straining of human relationships. A healthy balance aimed at integrating mind and body to achieve a harmonious existence with nature should be aimed at. The old conflict as to which occupies uppermost is now irrelevant. The body is the instrument of the divine; a material aid through which mind expresses itself in a variety of forms. Plato says in Timaeus that mind should be moved with the body. The body and mind can be integrated in team sports. Educational activities should be considered as a play. Sporting nature that should be developed will annihilate the ego and makes one accept victory and defeat with equanimity. Undue commercialization of sports must be avoided. Too much emphasis on winning alone will defeat the very purpose of the games. The ‘loser’ who determines the winner is as much a part of the end result.

Too much emphasis on learning by rote and packing information will lead to the asymmetric ‘development’ of mind at the expense of the body. The environment in the educational institutions must be developed in such a way that presence there should be personally rewarding. Too much focus on success in examination has led to education being perceived as punishment. Working on independent projects of one’s choice/passion will increase the growth of knowledge. Since market forces have played a significant role in the choice of careers, there has been a lopsided growth in the numbers of technically and scientifically trained graduates. Science and technical education should not ignore/undermine the study of humanities. As the purpose of any activity in the longer or shorter run is the improvement of human conditions, scientists should not lose track of this rich knowledge. One should bear in mind that science and technology are not independent of social and historical forces prevalent. They are the very forces that spur new thinking. There is no growth of knowledge in isolation. Growth of scientific knowledge at the expense of humanities will make a machine out of a scientist and retard cultural development. Without diversity life will be a drudgery, dull and drab. Study of humanities alongside will enable a scientist to develop a more humane attitude resulting in human technologies as against demoniac. Divorce from humanities and liberal arts will engender demoniac tendencies and the world may once again witness the horrors of the holocaust.

The integration of mind and body is possible by acknowledging the supermind (ED titles) and developing curricula which validate these bases. An integral mind which unites both body and mind can be formed by discovering correspondences between these entities.

Scientific Tradition:

The scientific tradition is that of questioning and conflict. Aristotle who disagreed with his mentor Plato about the Forms, started his own independent school to study nature. This was only the beginning of a long series of great conflicts/debates that have aided the growth of scientific knowledge. A free and liberal atmosphere in our schools/universities should enable new initiatives and bold thinking. After all expression is the primary goal of any emotion. Suppressing of emotion will not only thwart the development of Arts and Sciences but left alone might lead to abnormal/deviant behavior. The court system in the University should be strengthened so much so that during periods of intense conflicts the subordinate should fearlessly sue the super-ordinate for grace. This should pave the way for movement both at the subordinate and super-ordinate levels. These courts should have a separate existence and jurisdiction so much so that academic disputes should be settled here alone and not elsewhere.

Scientific tradition is also that of questioning. Blind adherence to authority will stagnate development and block any fresh stream of knowledge flowing in. Questioning of super-ordinate does not mean disrespect. This is a culture that needs to be developed. The knowledge of the East stagnated for centuries due to the tyranny of the super-ordinate who discouraged any questioning as it was interpreted to be insubordination.

With the arrival of large number of women in the Academic setup, free expression now gets a new definition. The sensitivities and expectation in the Academy must be respected. This is an opportunity to develop new ways of communication, codes of conduct, and experiment in the division of labor which ultimately translated to home living may harvest rich fruits in terms of improved relationships and existential bliss. Both man and woman should use this opportunity to get a preliminary training in the home sciences. The Mission of the academy was equality in education and having arrived there we should move forward. This is attainable only by integrating the opposing forces of patrimony and matrimony.

Civil Rights Movement: Movement towards a Transcendent God Head

The Civil Rights movement in the United States History for equal opportunity is unparalleled in the history of the world. United States was rightly constituted for such a struggle/movement. The New World with its emphasis on Education as a prerequisite for the upward movement in the society stirred up for the first time long suppressed feelings and emotions in the deepest psychological faculties of the man. The declaration that all men are created equal paved the way to the struggle for manhood under the blessings of liberty. Again the history of Science is the history of Man. The declaration made it implicit that through labor (equity) alone shall manhood be recognized. The struggle of the scientists in establishing an egalitarian society cannot be overemphasized.

Their thinking being universal, the Universities and Institutions of the new world provided a common/neutral ground for men from different races and cultures and knowledge bases to prove their mettle. Emphasis on individual as well as collective enterprises, universal discourse and shared ideas have made the realization of this goal possible. If God is defined as pure consciousness, then the contributions of the scientists in attaining that consciousness by transcending their ‘natural limits’ is significant and is a fact of common experience in the academic set up today. The attainment of civil rights have not only enabled new initiatives with a fearless mind but also enabled one to assert his existence in the law courts. Transcending the senses once a privilege of a learned few is now a matter of individual experience. The attainment of civil rights and liberties have redefined the traditional academic structures/standards and laid foundations for a new linguistic and cultural exchanges. This is a revolution towards harmony and justice in the world.

The institution of family in light of these developments should/has undergone a radical change. With the advent of technologies alleviating drudgery and knowledge bases enabling to function more systematically, new positive roles are getting more emphasized and recognized. This is a direct consequence of the 4^th of July declaration. The fundamental institute has become a secret/unconscious laboratory for the implementation of new ideas implicit in the declaration. The role of the man in relation to the institute has taken new meaning regarding the division of labor, roles and justice. Man has ceased to play the only traditional role of the bread winner but has new challenges in front of him to maintain the order and the rule of law. He should now lead by example and participate with responsibility in the world. Gone are the days of escape and retreat. The new role should make him conscious of the importance of manhood in establishing and maintaining the office of reason. A new understanding of his manifold nature will enable him to strike new degrees of correspondence whose linguistic basis rests firmly on the civil rights titles legislated should be initiated with nature. This will eliminate unnecessary wastage, corruption and pave the way for divine economy. The nature of Manhood is Divine and guided by providence so far, there is no going back on it. The road ahead is full of hope and promise.

Integral Medicine

Before discussing integral medicine it is important to start with the definition of integral medicine. A positive definition of medicine would be any thing which aids and promotes the delight of existence thereby reducing pain and suffering and at the same time maintaining normal constitutional functions of the organ. A definition of a healthy society would be one where all systems are functioning in the natural order of things and every member of the society participates fully in the collective living thereby harmoniously existing with every other member of the society including the environment in which the society is constituted. In short every society is defined by an ecosystem. This implies individuality and mutual recognition. Challenge to the ecosystem can come from within in over exploitation, overpopulation and disregard for nature. Challenge can also come from without in competition and external aggression in a variety of forms. In a healthy society justice is foremost and all the laws and institutions are geared to function towards that end only. In short a just society is a healthy society.

Primitive man feared nature. Bodily illness to him was the work of demoniac spirits. The nature and causes of the illness was ill understood paving the way to witchcraft and other irrational ways of curing them. The Greek medicine perceived illness as having natural origins. The Indian system also recognized divine origins apart from natural origins.

The current medical system recognized in most parts of the world emphasizes the allopathic system. Here disease is regarded as having a local molecular origin in the body and a magic bullet therapy in the form of a chemical drug is recommended for its alleviation. Although most diseases of the body have pathological origin, the illness of the mind have causes beyond pathological alone.

If man is considered as an entity existing within nature and not without, then the origin and cure of diseases must have a relation to the entire working in the cosmos. If the cosmos is a whole ordered and arranged then defect in any constituent should manifest as illness of the body. Thus the illness is only apparent in the body. The real causes lie elsewhere to be discovered.

Man’s activities since July 4th 1776, have grown exponentially. He has excelled in both intellectual and physical labor in order to provide for the maintenance of order. His manifold nature has not only enabled unimagined scientific and technological breakthroughs but also reckless exploitation of natural resources with a view to maximize profits. This has resulted in loss of balance and disharmony with nature. Decrease in bio-diversity, polluted cities, extinction of species threatening break of food chain are some of the direct consequences of man’s increased activities. Obviously man’s activities are geared towards moving to a new world order where everything is ordered and harmonious. This chaos is a prima materia for establishing future order.

The present disharmony with regard to nature is the chief cause of a variety of illness known and unknown confronting the humankind. The biomedical approach to medicine considers body as just a machine run with cogwheels, gears, nuts and bolts thereby ignoring the spiritual and the emotional part. Many bodily illnesses have origin in the mind which is its emotional counterpart. In this rapid urbanization and workaholic culture he has lost the rhythm with nature. Irregular habits have once for all demolished the institutional regimes that is prerequisite for a complete living and fulfillment of one’s activities. Bodily health has been defined as the union of the soul with the ultimate reality. Individual soul is constituted of mind, life and matter. This triune system should together constitute the fourth the transcendental, the One, the indivisible. Having discovered that where do we go from here.

Man is not an absolute entity. If knowledge is relational then man exists only in relation to woman. The disharmonious and asymmetric development of man has been rendered possible in the present world order as many societies still do not provide for woman’s expression. Suppression of this part of social existence also means suppression of man’s unconscious when it reaches the threshold of consciousness when the mind gets polarized. Can this be the reason for the psychotic and schizophrenic symptoms.

The biomedical approach puts too much emphasis on the expression/contraception of the material (lower) nature at the cost of the higher. Here we have a conflict between the sensualists and the transcendentalists. No one denies that the generation of the vital (subtle) fluids is important for the attainment of seminal thinking. At the same time if these do not find appropriate cultural channels they can lead to outbursts and abnormal living. If the mental health factor lies in the spiritual or transcendental existence then we have to place more emphasis on establishing higher institutions at the same time providing ways and means for the complete expression of the lower. The lower should be seen and the higher and the higher in the lower as the alchemist opined. This is possible in the institution of family were reformed/reconstituted corresponding to exchange of new materials which constitute the new custom. Pain is only at the level of the physical and growing beyond this plane in relationship will provide medicament for relief

The rapid strides made in the allopathic systems has rendered possible a deeper understanding of body’s function at the molecular/cellular level. It is now known that electrical forces are responsible for triggering any phenomena in the body. By use of this knowledge drugs are designed either to mimic or inhibit certain biological processes that are known to cause the disorder. If mind and matter correspond with each other then the disorder in the body on certain occasions should have a correspondence with the mental processes. If mental processes are a consequence of the information available from matter then knowledge about the material should play a major role in solving mental disorders. As heliotropism is the law for the natural growth of the plants, similarly mind grows towards light, wisdom and knowledge. Mind does not rest until it knows. An open society where there is not only no secrecy but a free play enabling ideas and information to be exchanged is a prerequisite if society is not to be thrown into a schizophrenic disorder.

Art as Therapy

If mind is perceived to be a higher entity than body then the biomedical approach dealing with mental illness by treating with drugs alone is bound to fail. Mind is both an analyzing and synthesizing faculty and perceives the world through the instrument of reason. When confronted with irrational it breaks down. Reason is circular, perfect. Mind can arrive at the same point from where it started after a thinking process with out getting lost. Mind likes certainty. At this point the feeling part which is of a lower degree than the reason should be considered. The feeling is the subjective aspect distant from reason. Art belongs to this realm. An integral approach to mental health should not only employ rational methods but also provide ample space for the subjective side. Many a times especially in cases of great emotional turmoil subjective plays a significant role in expressing the deep and inaccessible reaches of the psyche. It also soothes any injury it may have suffered. A scientist concentrating only on the objective employs only a part of the manifold faculties that are available to him. The subjective and the objective both aspire at seeking truth except that their materials and methods are different. The subjective relies more on intuition. The zest for mind in arriving at truth does not hinder it from employing the one against the other. Truth is freedom and mind prefers the shorter path depending on the circumstances. By seeking truth mind experiences the infinite. Realization of the infinite is bliss and delight of existence.

World today is very fluid. The integrated economics and voluminous global trade have made people and societies very mobile. The large scale mining activities have made possible discovery of hitherto unknown materials. Man made products like artificial fibers and synthetic substitutes name anything have replaced the existing natural products. With almost total dependence on these materials and technologies for a livelihood and social movement the constitution of the psyche has undergone a sea change. New and unknown illness have been discovered either due to public health problems or body confronting these new materials. The traditional systems of medicine cannot offer cure for a variety of illness that is confronting the humanity. The simple reason being that the environmental and economic conditions in which these medicines had curative power are no longer prevalent today. A variety of illness can be cured by integrating economics of different nationalities who have a common political philosophy eliminating unnecessary competition paving the way to the clean up of the environment. Apart from that the principles of traditional medicine must be once again investigated under the rigor of modern scientific methods and integrated with the modern medicine. Since man is a whole, a holistic approach may prove more effective in confronting the problems of the mind body dualism. Modern medicine says that disease have microbial origin. These microbes can be seen and detected through the use of advanced instruments like microscope etc. A relevant question is that are the microbes causes or symptoms?

Lack of mental hygiene and complexation are causes for many public disorders manifest. The Greeks believed that failure to preserve the Palladium (city goddess) will lead to the destruction of the city by plague and pestilence. This is only a symbolic way of expressing the truth that complexes in the mind are fundamental in establishing functional systems. I postulate that there is a ‘micro-mind’ in every individual/collective which can be detected by deeper self analysis and synthesis. Understanding this part of the mind both at the collective and individual level can provide solutions to schizophrenic disorders. Physical disorder and unhygienic conditions is only an external manifestation of a deeper symptom in the mind. This can be remedied in institutional regimes, assigning proper credits to the collective and the individual where it has been denied in the past colonial history. An education program which enables the citizens for an active civic life thereby loving their city like a goddess can channel the libido into proper conduct and cultural modes. For this again establishment of a divine life is a prerequisite. A hygienist approach to medicine may be a solution to many million kilograms of toxic substance ingested by the humanity. This problem merits serious consideration.

Since illness has origins in the microbes, illness of the mind has origin in the family. Family being the microcosm man alone is not responsible for the disorders.

If we propose to establish justice and liberty in the new world order the reform should start from the fundamental institutions; the most fundamental being the institution of marriage/family. If the world is imagined to be a cosmic computer with manifold addresses denoting cellular units then for a perfect and harmonious working, all systems have to function in synchronicity. Having discovered family as opposed to man only as the microcosm it is now the responsibility of both man and woman to move forward to build this higher institution on the new foundation with the new materials thus discovered/invented. The first principle for laying the foundation should be unconditional love. The terms and conditions for settlement should be worked out on a reciprocal basis where one equivalent is exchanged for an equivalent upholding fair trade. Modern man and woman owe a debt of gratitude to the scientific and learning tradition by means of which a nondiscriminatory and new linguistic existence has been rendered possible. This is a direct outcome of the July 4^th declaration which explicitly states that all men are created equal, implying that all women are also created equal.

Traditional and feudal cultural exchanges will not be conducive to the mental health anymore. With the rise of nationalism and establishment of Missions of respective nations in each others Capital, the educated modern citizen has to bear the cross of responsible citizenship on his shoulders. The customs and protocols must reflect the spirit of existence and especially customary exchanges must be in accord with the modern modes of production. In contrast to emphasis on division of labor alone emphasis on shared values and exchange of roles in order to complement conscious/unconscious must be attempted. There will be no room for power struggle if duties are performed with a disinterestedness and offering whatever that comes out of it to providence.

In contrast to understanding the individual alone an emphasis on understanding institution in its material as well as its transcendental aspect should be attempted. The codes of scientific conduct learned in the Universities must be translated in to day to day living in these micro institutes. Every home should become a living laboratory for the ideas and opinions enunciated by the scientists and their life and sacrifices should be the guiding light and inspiration in moving forward.

A family is a value based institution as opposed to the value neutrality of science. In order to arrive at measured values to be enforced in these institutions, the foundations have to be revalued and investigated once again in light of current advancements and global integration trends. This will pose a formidable challenge in integrating cross cultural currents that are at confluence in the new world. an integral approach to education especially in the history of sciences and philosophy can help arrive at acceptable standards. A very rigid stand regard ones cultural achievements will not help in this direction. Open mind and toleration of the values of other cultural systems are a pre requisite. Universal education in accordance with the nondiscriminatory ED titles should enable an individual of any background to affirm his existence. This is a revolution as far as the social movement is concerned. Curriculum and subject matter should be developed as per these guidelines.

In short with advance in education and attainment of gender equality it is the responsibility of both partners to forge working partnerships and move forward in building this higher institution.

Technology in Education:

Since prehistoric times it has been man's endeavor to alleviate drudgery and make life convenient for himself. Beginning from sharpening of stones, invention of the wheels and various simple technologies of the ancient societies, he has managed to have the entire world at display on his personal computers in a matter of minutes. This is indeed expansion and integration of his consciousness. Educational training methods have undergone a sea change. What started with as a oral tradition where knowledge (information) was passed on to the successive generation by initiation of a select few who memorized the entire texts to preserve in the memory banks, universalization of education has been rendered free for all through open universities operating through the medium of technology like televisions and internet. Surely the world has traveled a long way in achieving this grand unification. The danger that lies in too much technology oriented education is that it could make the individuals very impersonal and thwart creativity. Social interactions may suffer as relationships are personal. We should not lose sight of the fact that these technologies are not an end in themselves but material aids acting as a means towards achieving social integration. The teacher behind the technology is the ultimate. Thus a focus on transcendental aspect of existence in education is significant in achieving this realization. This is a must if order is to be established in class rooms and separative tendencies arrested. The teacher occupies the uppermost strata in the classroom/schools and it is here that every thing converges and unites. Teacher is the transcendental godhead in the classroom. School administrators should not forget this most important aspect of school living when writing for grant money for technology up-gradation. A teacher worth cannot be measured in salaries. His/her qualitative worth lies is his presence in the classroom embodying universal love and tolerance. Teachers should be aware of this divine aspect of their existence. This will enable them to work with more self esteem and social recognition than what is present today. Most criminal and deviant tendencies in any society can be arrested by laying stress on the qualitative worth of a teacher. Future education policies should focus more on this aspect of individual worth when deciding on human resource development.

Responsible Studentship

An ancient aphorism says that if we consider knowledge as a whole, a quarter of it is obtained from the teacher, a second quarter from the student's self effort, a third quarter from celibacy (restraint) and the rest gradually. Learning never ends. One is a student throughout life.

The universalization of education in the new world has made possible the confluence of a variety of cultures, linguistics and ethnic backgrounds from fundamentally different knowledge bases in the form of students, faculty and the supporting staff. A university is the dream land of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. whose ideals are taking concrete shape. Students who constitute the foundation of any university carry a lot of expectations not only from their families/community but also from the society where they study and teachers as well. The primary purpose of a students stay in the university is education. The universities in the new world provide a variety of opportunities for their self expression. A rich and vigorous university life implies active participation of students in all spheres of learning including administration. Mere study of the curriculum alone is not enough. The variety of student population from different parts of the globe provide a first hand experience of their native culture and values. Their hopes and aspirations and what they can contribute to the missing elements in one's culture and values is worth understanding. Interactive learning at personal as well as academic level will provide a platform for expressing one's feeling and expectations for each other and tightly integrate differing cultures and nationalities. This is the first step in establishing a world government an idea about which Albert Einstein spoke and wrote so much about. Students from the upper class should also use this opportunity to adopt a brother or a sister from the lower classes and help them in leading through difficult areas of study and university life as a duty. This is emotionally very rewarding as this is the concretion of the spirit of existence. A university is the perfect place for living ones ideals. Sincere attempt must be made towards that end so as not to regret missed opportunities later. Every attempt must be made to forge friendship with compatriots from different disciplines. Sharing knowledge and information will pave the way for broadening ones mind and will be of great help in future in advanced learning.

Students should try to live the ideals opined by the scientists and put truth uppermost in their quest for knowledge. Every attempt should be made to live an ethical living. Emotional attachment to faculty (teachers) is not a sign of weakness but should be channeled accordingly to establish appropriate lines of communication. Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety nine percent perspiration opined Einstein. That one percent inspiration that comes from the mouth of the teacher will breath life in the endeavor and mission which constitute ninety nine percent of students perspiration. Conflict of interest is normal in any learning center and every attempt should be made to bring this into open freely and fearlessly.

Students should also develop perfect accountability. This is possible by holding offices in the student government and managing their residences (dormitories, hostels etc.). wherever possible perfect accountability should also be maintained with teachers and parents. This will pave the way to trust and understanding.

Learning to face success and failures in the examination with equanimity is a primary requirement for students to succeed in later part of their grown up life. Success is not everything and failure is not the end of the road. Failure is a pathway to success. Too much cramming at the cost of day to day routine will upset the natural balance and harmonious living. Too much dependence on stimulating drugs in high doses to stay awake and concentrated will defeat the very purpose of stay in schools. Every attempt must be made to develop a positive approach towards the subjects in the curriculum. Love of the subject will excite a lot of interest in studies. Civil service after graduation should be the highest ideal. After all knowledge comes from the society and it is the individual's responsibility to put every thing back into it for further growth. Disowning the society is an act of utmost irresponsibility.

Since university/school is the place where students make first experiments in love, one should tread this path cautiously. The outcome of any initiative must be accepted with a sportive mind. After all life is long and it is a continuous learning process.

Students should avoid and say no to drugs at all times. The primary purpose of education is to develop control over mind and body. Drugs have no place in school and personal life. Addiction to drugs is a total failure of the mind and body. There is no problem in life that has no solution. Developing more responsible attitude towards one's family/community and confiding with teacher/counselor will alleviate a lot of pain. There is no need to succumb to peer pressure and live in the fear of being rejected and branded as outcaste. The alternative is to start one's own group where people share similar interests and provide emotional support and security. The only peers in the school/university are teachers and nobody else.

To conclude student part of one's life is most precious as this constituent in the person is provided with a divine guide in the form of a teacher. The teacher with his grace leads us through the most difficult periods of our life so that the student may see light and attain wisdom. Abuse or squandering this opportunity will retard ones growth and make unfit for a future civic life. Every attempt must be made to satisfy and fulfill all the requirements of studentship which will only enable to move forward in establishing a new world.

The Role of the Graduates From U. S. Universities in Maintaining the New World Order

A perfect republic you have described can be found nowhere on the earth.

The birth of the New World on 4^th of July 1776 on the American soil is the birth of a new era in the history of the world. That United States will lead the world into the next millennium is now self evident. This merit has been earned by the United States by virtue of man's labor and not as a default due to failure of other nations.

Born in obscurity when the entire world was dominated by the might and expansionist tendencies of the colonial powers, the land of providence has traveled a long way in arriving at the current destination. The Olympian Zeus has waged a victorious struggle against the Titanic forces. The new world has been the only hope then and now for the people repressed by the old world order. Conceived in Liberty, United States was the first republic to have drafted a clear written democratic constitution. Out in the world she had to experience the birth pangs and growing pains. She had to face internal contradictions repeatedly in the free society she set out to establish. The most significant of this is slavery. After emancipating herself from this abhorrent institution she got entangled herself in the complex conflicts of Europe in the World wars. This led to a qualitative change in the American society. New projects and missions set men working on bold and brave new ideas culminating in the invention and explosion of the atomic bomb. These projects also attracted some of the most brilliant men in the history into the United States. During the prosperous years of the post world war she also got entangled in the complex conflicts of Asia and rest of the world. These nations professed a values systems entirely different from that implied in the July 4^th declaration of independence. She no longer could pursue an isolationist policy and her success in the world wars and improving the quality of life for every citizen made people elsewhere in the world look up to her for solution and leadership. Day by day the expectations went on increasing as she achieved many more successes in many of her projects including the landing of the man on the moon. These new exploits shattered the old icons and infused hope into the struggle going on elsewhere in the world. United States could not afford to fail any more.

The greatest asset of United States is her constitution and the laws and institutions governed under them. This and the pioneering work of her citizens is responsible for the prosperity and perfection she has attained in all spheres of life. She has attained universality in education which no other nation can match at present. Having got there United States has a very responsible role in the post war era in maintaining peace and leading the world into the new millennium.

The first and foremost is that of securing justice. Much of the world history has been distorted and only those facts palatable to the special interests are presented in the educational curricula. New investigations and insights have to be initiated to unravel the individual contribution and integrate various individual contributions to get a complete picture.

United States should actively assist the ongoing struggle for Civil Rights all over the world. She has the strength and is morally equipped to provide such assistance as her own institutions have been demonstrated to uphold the highest standards in the execution of the principles of justice and equality. The present world is tightly integrated by the media and citizens are bombarded with information. The free institutions of the United States can act very responsibly in day to day world history by providing a true and correct picture about these happenings.

The University/education system can host a variety of programs on the electronic media and in the real life to enable people from different cultural backgrounds to come to a common platform. This will give them a first hand experience of life in the USA and the workings of her democratic institutions. Understanding the foundations of USA will make way for proper perception of American foreign policies in the light of changing world scenario and avoid unnecessary cultural clashes. U. S. Trade and industry can play an active role in this area not only by expanding globally but also investing in the local culture.

The national mission of the Education Department should be globalized and global education mission should be initiated with a view to eradicate illiteracy in underdeveloped countries. United States universities can play an active role in helping National governments solve their pressing problems by providing access to their infrastructure like libraries, archives, educational programs and research institutions. Attempts should be made for fraternal tie ups with universities and research institutes elsewhere with a view to promote integration of learning. Exchange programs should be multiplied many fold. Both individual and institutional initiatives must be encouraged.

United States should assist pre democratic states in transitioning to a democratic state. This should not be mere translation to voting. It is now clear that the democratic path which United States chose was not strewn with flowers. The struggle to prove one's existence and acquire voting rights as exemplified in the Civil Rights struggle is now evident. People over the world should not get the impression that acquiring the right to vote is an easy process. The same standards of manhood should be applied elsewhere also. Their individual struggle must go on and they have to arrive at a philosophical basis for their democratic governments based on their native cultural and social ethos. A whole sale import of any system will not solve the problem. The graduates from the American universities should act as representatives of the American systems which function to near perfection. The American degrees should not have a mere ornamental value. There is a danger of this already happening. Graduates from these universities should behave with a lot more responsibilities than their counterparts elsewhere. They should initiate new thinking and take initiatives in areas where no man/woman has ventured before. The worth of the university lies in the social worth of her graduates functioning in the societies. They should be willing to venture in to underdeveloped areas of the world/knowledge systems and assist in national and the world bodies in development and in times of crisis. Let us remember that it is only America that is awake when the whole world is asleep. American graduates should not be construed as opportunists in this process. Their initiatives should be bold and the end result should demonstrate their commitment to the advancement of the society in which they are participating. In an increasingly insecure world beset with environmental pollution and economic uncertainties they have to put into practice all they have learned in the university like efficient management of systems, optimum use of technology and natural resources and high awareness regarding environmental problems. They should always raise their arms in defense of Truth and Liberty and not compromise with the evil.

The new millennium with billions of uneducated/semiliterate population demands a very high commitment on the part of the American graduates in running the world and its organs efficiently. There is every hope that given the same standards and passion for truth are maintained and nurtured America will succeed in all her endeavors and missions. The world expects a lot from the United States and she can deliver it positively. God bless America.

The Impact of the Declaration of July 4^th 1776 on the independence of India.

The foundations for establishing a divine life in relation to 4^th of July 1776 declaration of independence in India was laid on September 11, 1893 by Swami Vivekananda during his appearance in the parliament of religions held at Chicago.

India had witnessed serious decadence in her institutions. They had failed to dispense justice to one and all. The constantly feuding monarchies in order to remain in power connived with the European trading companies. This only resulted in the trading companies, especially the East India Company to establish a firm foothold on the Indian soil and enforce her laws and regulations (the regulating act of 1776). Indians already dispossessed were a mute witness to the atrocities and injustice heaped on them both by the trading companies and the local feudal order. The frustrations led to a great outburst during the mutiny (first war of Indian independence) in 1857. This struggle led to a lot of bloodshed and mistrust of the Europeans. India became a subject of the British crown in 1858 and earned certain Rights. This also paved the way to English/University education in India for the first time. It is a fact that education in India was restricted to only a few classes/castes. The system followed was that of an apprenticeship where the student would serve his master for a period of time until the master felt satisfied and discharged the pupil under his care for worldly activities. The learning mainly consisted of study and memorization of ancient texts. Oral tradition ruled the day.

The Indian education was to witness a great revolution after the appearance of Swami Vivekananda in Chicago concomitant with the arrival of Ms. Margaret Noble (Sister Nivedita) to lay foundations for the education of women in India. The mission of Vivekananda' s education was the making of the Man and to prove the divinity of the man. The triumph of Vivekananda as reported in the news papers came as a welcome development to the millions of enslaved Hindus in the subcontinent. This infused new enthusiasm and missionary zeal hitherto unknown to them. Hindus were dispossessed of their heritage primarily due to lack of understanding of their knowledge bases, rigid internal stratification blocking any movement and other worldly thinking. They were always at conflict with each other as regards who was uppermost.

Due to the presence and dominance of the colonial powers in India, the relationship with the United States remained very Platonic for several decades. Nonetheless Mahatma Gandhi initiated his civil disobedience movement in South Africa was mainly influenced by H. D. Thoreau. It is pertinent to recall here that South Africa had/has similar demographic constitution as the United States. The great Indian Nationalist and educator Shri. Rabindranath Tagore had friends in America (Helen Keller) and visited the land. There was not much migration to the United States from India until the Presidency of John F. Kennedy. The only famous Indian scientist who emigrated to the United States much before India freed herself from the colonial powers was Nobel laureate S. Chandrasekhar.

Most Indians who emigrated to United States were/are professionals. They have not integrated into the mainstream primarily due to their colonial heritage, deep rooted

caste complexes, and a feeling of inferiority in comparison to the European races and most importantly lack of self knowledge.

The British established Universities/Colleges in India primarily to impart a clerical education to maintain the colonial order. The ideas of nationalism based on liberty, equality and justice were imbibed by Indians mainly from the European revolutionary movements. Since Indians functioned in a very rigid institutional frameworks at home it was impossible for them to imbibe the spirit of scientific inquiry that lay behind these movements.

It was only after gaining independence that Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India gave a call to the Nation to employ science and technology on a large scale to solve the pressing problem of poverty and hunger. He declared that India's temples lay in her river projects. He put a lot of emphasis on higher education and appointed eminent scientists to head important national projects.

The spirit of inquiry can only flourish in an atmosphere of complete liberty. Indian society for centuries has experienced the tyranny of the authorities. There has been no room for free thinking and enterprise in any of these institutions in post independent India. Pre independent India boasted of a few scientist like C. V. Raman who ventured into science on their own with their own personal funds. Even the research institutes established in the post independent India have not lived up to the expectations and have not contributed any thing original in comparison to the United States. This is mainly due to inferiority complex and too much comparison with other nations especially the USA so much so that they have lost sight of the national mission as spelled out by great Indian thinkers. Most of the research is duplicated causing a lot of wastage.

The main impediment to development of science and scientific inquiry in India is due to absence/no recognition of manhood which disables a person from taking any initiative. The history of science is the history of Man. The academic setup is very hierarchic, divisions are rigid and there is hardly any movement . This again reflects the society in which in India finds herself. Being an ancient society she has inherited the burden of tradition which constantly interferes with free inquiry. The overpopulation and insecurity adds to it. Most education is job oriented with very little room for independent research. In 50 years of independence she has not made any original contribution to scientific knowledge. Even H. G. Khorana had to prove his mettle in the United States vindicating the truth that Indian nation lacks manhood.

What ails India's science has been clearly spelled out. Lack of Manhood. If India has to reform her education she should first recognize her manhood and free herself from isolation. The globalization process that is ongoing will be meaningless if Indian boys do not grow up to be men and assume global responsibilities.

In order to achieve this the foundations laid by Swami Vivekananda in the USA and the advances made by Sri Aurobindo in India should be the guiding light. It is ironical that a country which has accomplished in all spheres of learning and attained highest knowledge of the absolute should find herself so impotent when it comes to globalization of education.

Time alone will answer if India will attain manhood and join the great march to the new world order or lag behind and attain the status of a billion eyed monsters. United States can help only if Indians can help themselves. God help India.
